About the Program

The accounting major at Mount Union is part of our School of Business, which earned rigorous accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). You will gain an understanding of the global business environment while applying your classroom knowledge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.

  • Curriculum


    In addition to in-depth study of accounting taxation, auditing, finance, and management, accounting majors at the University of Mount Union will explore courses in business law, micro and macroeconomics, statistics, applied strategy,  and quantitative methods, among a variety of others. Such requirements in the major provide students with a well-rounded education and the opportunity to grow both their communication and interpersonal skills, a necessity in the world of business.

    Internships

    Students may find internships by registering on College Central NetworkNortheast Ohio Talent ExchangeOhio Means Internships, or by contacting their academic department for leads.  They may also schedule an appointment with our staff to plan out their internship search and identify other sources of leads. Appointments may be made by calling 330-823-8685.  Please note that in many cases obtaining an internship is a competitive process and may require an interview or other type of screening procedure.

    Interested in interning in Washington, DC or Chicago, IL?  Schedule an appointment with Sara Fugett at fugettsb@honornm.com or 330-829-8211.  The University of Mount Union works with The Washington Center and Chicago Semester to offer internships and coursework during summer, fall, and spring semesters.  Interested students are strongly encouraged to plan these experiences several semesters in advance.

    Student Organizations

    Mount Union Accounting Club is a student-led organization on Mount Union’s campus. This club exists to promote interest in, and an awareness of, the accounting profession and the career opportunities it offers. Membership is open to current students who have successfully completed at least one accounting course. 

    Delta Mu Delta is an honor society specifically for students with business related majors at ACBSP-accredited schools. Each member must maintain a 3.2 GPA and be within the top 20% of their program.

  • CPA Exam Requirements

     

    The state of Ohio and many other states have expanded their requirements for CPA certification. The University of Mount Union provides solid preparation for students interested in becoming CPAs. Students are required to have 150 semester hours of college credit, including:

    24 SEMESTER HOURS OF ACCOUNTING COURSES IN THE FOLLOWING SUBJECT AREAS:

    • Financial Accounting
    • Information Systems
    • Management Accounting
    • Professional Ethics and Responsibilities
    • Taxation

    24 SEMESTER HOURS OF BUSINESS ORIENTED COURSES WITH COVERAGE IN EACH OF THE FOLLOWING SUBJECT AREAS: 

    • Business Ethics
    • Business Organization
    • Communication Skills
    • Economics
    • Group and Individual Behavior
    • Finance
    • Legal and Social Environment of Business
    • Marketing

    Note:
     These 150 semester hours may be obtained at the graduate or undergraduate level.

    The University of Mount Union offers a bachelor's degree in accounting with the following options for meeting the CPA exam requirements.

    OPTION 1: ADDITIONAL UNDERGRADUATE HOURS

    Students may take extra courses during any or all of the traditional eight semesters and during summer sessions. The normal course load of 15 or 16 hours could be increased to 18 hours and the additional required hours taken during one or more summer sessions, all 30 additional hours could be taken during summer sessions, or by extending study at Mount Union for an additional year. The student would major in accounting earning 27 accounting hours and satisfy the 24-hour business-oriented courses with a minor in business administration.

    OPTION 2: 4 + 1 PROGRAM 

    Students may participate in our 4+1 program. In this program, a traditional bachelor's degree in accounting is received from the University of Mount Union. After completion of one additional year of graduate study at an affiliated university or other university of the student's choice, the student is awarded a master's degree from that institution (MBA, MA or MS).

    ADDITIONAL OPTION

    For accounting majors who are not planning on careers in public accountancy, our traditional undergraduate option is available. This option is ideal as preparation for careers in business, industry, finance, non-profit or governmental areas.
